Marking and Feedback

This topic contains about 15 mins worth of reading and videos

What is this topic about?

This module will guide you through the following topics:

  1. View a course and it's components the same way that your students view your course through Student View
  2. How to view and grade students' work in one place using the SpeedGrader - the Canvas LMS quintessence for marking.
  3. How to use Markbook/Marks to filter and bulk actions for a task, and snapshot of your class performance

Let's get the ball rolling!

Below is the tabbed compilation of key information in the form of dot points and videos for each of the items listed above which will empower you to kick start your content creation journey on Canvas.

Student view allows the instructor to see the course as their students will experience the Canvas Course.

Student view activates a Test Student who can submit activities as an enrolled student.

Some more information about Student View:

  • Test Student is automatically enrolled in your markbook
  • Use it to be sure your course is just the way you want/need it
  • Double check that everything is published and available
  • Participate in your course as Test Student to verify Canvas functionality
  • Submit work as Test Student to have student submissions to test Canvas grading options
  • Reset Test Student when you need to clear out data and start over

As an instructor, SpeedGrader allows you to view and mark student assignment submissions in one place using a simple point scale or complex rubric.

Here are some benefits of SpeedGrader™ :

  • Everything in one place: Student work is displayed on the left hand side of the instructor's screen, with the grading panel on the left
  • Color-coded student list: Allows the instructor to see at a glance who has turned work in and needs to be graded [orange dot], who has already been graded [green check], and who has not yet turned in work [student name is light gray]
  • Time stamp: Shown for each piece of student work - late assignments show LATE and time stamp is red
  • Variety of feedback:  Instructors can provide written as well as audio/video feedback
  • Create feedback loops: Students can reply to your feedback within their graded responses

Some additional ways to use it is to withhold your feedback from all students until you complete grading, use Rubrics to speed through grading, annotate student submission documents and Use the Canvas Teacher App Links to an external site. to grade student's work on the go.

The Gradebook (known as Markbook in our instance) helps instructors easily view and enter grades for students. Depending on the Grade display type, grades for each assignment can be viewed as points, percentage, complete or incomplete, GPA scale, or letter grade.

Only graded assignments, graded discussions, graded quizzes, and graded surveys that have been published display in the Gradebook. Not Graded assignments are not included.

The default view in the Gradebook is to view all students at a time, but you can also view students individually in the Gradebook Individual View. However, Individual View currently does not support all settings and options from the Gradebook.

Enhanced Gradebook Filters: We have enabled the new feature and therefore we can use the Enhanced Gradebook Filters to create and apply gradebook filters using an updated interface.

Enhanced Gradebook Filters allows you to select and manage filter types used in a gradebook filter and enable or disable a filter. A filter may be used once or saved for future use.
