S5 Pol 1 Recognising Polynomials

Stage 5 Mathematics Recognising Polynomials

Success Criteria

Determine whether a function is a polynomial, giving reasons why.

Describe polynomials in terms of their degree, leading terms, leading coefficient and constant term.

Create a polynomial from given parameters.

Open Ended Task

Write down two different polynomials that are non-monic, have a degree between 3 and 5 (inclusive) and have a negative constant term.

For P(x)=4x53x2+2x+1, what are;

a. the leading term

b. the degree

c. the constant term

Write down three expressions that someone might think are polynomials, but do not satisfy the definition of a polynomial. Explain why these expressions can not be a polynomial.
